How This App Gives New Users Friends on Day One

The invite flow that brings familiar faces into a new user’s first feed.

Hi app founders, designers, and marketers,

Housewarming is a social app for sharing everyday moments with close friends.

This week, we’re looking at how its invitation flow brings those friends into a user’s first feed.

      Show users what to post

Housewarming opens with examples of the moments people share on the app.

Seeing the content helps new users understand what belongs in the feed and gives them an idea for their own first post.

      Friends during onboarding

In the breakdown, some users arrive with a friend’s content already waiting. They can start exploring someone’s posts while they’re still getting familiar with the app.

Housewarming also asks users to invite three friends to access part of the experience.

      Count the friends who join

The useful number is how many invited friends complete signup.

For example, suppose 100 users start onboarding and half reach the invitation screen. If each sends 3 invitations and 30% of recipients join, those invitations bring in 45 new users.

Track how many users send invitations and how many invited friends finish signup.

      Product-market fit isn’t the problem

Chart shifts, sudden download spikes, and revenue jumps happen outside your app.

No matter how many problems it fixes or how good your UI and UX are, if distribution fails, your app will fail too.

To win at this game, you need a killer distribution system.

That’s the actual hard part of building a product.

And that’s what Social Growth Engineers does. It gets your app seen.

They break down what drives organic distribution for consumer apps:

      • Top-performing hooks and formats

      • Viral strategies and distribution mechanics

      • Trends worth hopping onto

And how (great) short-form content translates into revenue and downloads.

It’s like having your very own research team, reverse-engineering what’s working on IG and TikTok on a daily basis.

They track it all so you don’t have to.

Tip #11: Social apps should help new users connect with friends and see their posts as soon as they join.
